Find Your Next Walk

The trail catalog is the foundation of Tiki Tours. It contains every trail, hut, and campsite in the DOC network — sourced directly from the Department of Conservation's public API under a CC BY 4.0 licence.

Browsing the Map

When you open Tiki Tours, the map dashboard shows trails, huts, and campsites as markers. Zoom in to see more detail, zoom out to get the big picture. Tap any marker to see a summary card with key details — distance, difficulty, estimated time, and facilities.

The map clusters markers at lower zoom levels so things stay readable. As you zoom into a region, individual trails and huts appear.

Searching

Use the search bar to find trails, huts, or campsites by name. Search results show the top matches with type labels (trail, hut, campsite) so you can quickly find what you are after.

Search also matches region names — typing "Fiordland" shows all trails in the Fiordland region, not just trails with "Fiordland" in the name.

Filtering

Narrow your results with filters:

  • Region — select one or more DOC regions (e.g. Canterbury, Waikato, Southland)
  • Difficulty — Easy, Moderate, Difficult, Expert
  • Duration — under 2 hours, 2-4 hours, 4-8 hours, multi-day
  • Type — trails, huts, campsites, or all
  • Great Walks — toggle to show only New Zealand's Great Walks

Filters combine — selecting "Canterbury" + "Moderate" + "Multi-day" shows only moderate multi-day trails in the Canterbury region.

Trail Detail Pages

Tap a trail to see its full detail page:

  • Overview — description, distance, estimated time, difficulty grade
  • Facilities — for huts: bunk count, water, heating, toilet type. For campsites: tent sites, water, fire pits
  • Status — current DOC track status (open, closed, caution)
  • Map — the trail plotted on the map with start/end points
  • Add to Trip — one tap to add this trail to an existing or new trip

All data is attributed to DOC and links back to the canonical source on doc.govt.nz.
