  • CriticalIron Gate Hut Track closed due to active slip

    There is a large, loose, active slip on the Alice Nash Lodge to Iron Gate Hut Track, about 2 km from Alice Nash Lodge. Several trees have fallen in the area and the slip continues to move. It is not safe to cross. Image of active slip (JPG, 117K)

  • CriticalGwavas Forest access closed

    Within Gwavas Forest, public access to Makororo Road and Wakarara Road (for Yeomans Track, Ellis Hut and Poutaki Hut) is closed due to logging operations (Monday-Friday). The roads are open for foot access during weekends (Saturday-Sunday). This closure will be in effect until at least July 2026.

  • CriticalNo access to Ruahine Forest Park via Piripiri Road

    Piripiri Road is closed due to a road bridge failing its inspection, and requiring replacement. Piripiri Hut can still be accessed via Mid Pohangina Hut.

  • CriticalSimpsons Domain Campsite and Reserve closed

    The campsite and reserve are permanently closed. Simpsons bridge has been removed due to damage. This is a long term alert.

    Piripiri campsite is closed due to damage to the grounds by vehicles. This is a long term alert. 

  • CriticalTakapari Road closed

    Takapari Road is fully closed to all access until the end of June 2026 while maintenance work is underway.

  • CriticalMid Pohangina Track to Takapari Road via CE Track closed

    Mid Pohangina Track to Takapari Road via CE Track (which runs between Takapari Road and the Mid Pohangina Hut Sidle Track) is closed due to poor condition. This includes slips, windfall, vegetation, and incorrect marking. Use alternative tracks. This is a long term alert. 

  • CriticalTakapari Road closed to vehicles

    Takapari Road is closed to vehicles due to significant damage to the road and vegetation. The road remains open to pedestrians, bikes and light vehicles all year round.  DOC is working with volunteers to repair the road so that it can be reopened to vehicles. This is a long term alert.

  • CriticalPuniwhakau Track closure

    Due to the removal of an unsafe bridge, the track from Puniwhakau Road end to Puteore Hut is closed until further notice.

  • CriticalAranga Hut closed

    Aranga Hut is closed because of its dilapidated condition. This is a long-term alert.
