Northern Kaimai track closures
The below tracks are closed for kauri protection and storm damage. Multiple hazards exist and compromised kauri hygiene measures. Do not enter closed areas or bypass closures. Closed tracks: Lindemann Loop Track Waitengaue Track Wharawhara Tramway Track Low-Level Track (Waiorongomai Valley) due to significant slips Note: All other Waiorongomai Valley tracks are open. Open tracks: Te Rereatukahia Hut Track Tuahu (West) Track (Wairakau Road) – open. Caution is required at a slip site. Avoid in adverse weather. Waitawheta Tramway Tracks Access to Te Rereatukahia Hut: Te Rereatukahia Hut Track via Wharawhara Road Tuahu (West) Track Tuahu East Open North/South Track entrances The Old North–South Track between Waitawheta Hut and Te Rereatukahia Hut is an expert route. The route is unmaintained and may be unmarked in places. Expect muddy, steep, and rugged terrain, multiple stream crossings, and challenging travel conditions. Allow up to four additional hours travel between the huts. Be prepared for delays and carry equipment suitable for an overnight stay if required. This temporary access route is recommended only for highly experienced trampers. Note: The Waitawheta Tramway Track to Waitawheta Hut is open.
