Key Summit Track closures
Construction work to upgrade Key Summit Track is planned from 23 February to 30 June 2026 (subject to weather conditions). As the work progesses there will be partial track closures and occasional full-track closures. Visitors must obey all site signage, barriers and instructions from personnel. During partial track closures visitors can expect delays of up to 15 mins. During the day there may be construction noise from light machinery and helicopters. Explosives may be used - in which case contractors/sentries will be present. These upgrade works are limited to the Key Summit Track only and should not affect the normal visitor experience on the Routeburn Track. Queries can be directed to the project team at floodrecovery@doc.govt.nz or call Te Rua-o-te-moko / Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre on +64 3 249 7924. First published on 17 February 2026.
