Kirwans Track severe damage
Severe and ongoing storm damage has created a serious threat to visitor safety in sections of the track. Access to Montgomery and Kirwans Hut can be achieved via the Waitahu - Murray Connecting Track, which can be accessed from the Murray Creek car park. Alternatively, experienced visitors can follow the unmarked route beginning at Gannons Road end up the Waitahu River to Montgomery Hut, and on to Kirwans Hut. Similarly, Kirwans Hut can be accessed from Capleston (Boatman’s Road), but visitors are advised that the Kirwans Tunnel Bridge and track are closed due to active rock fall, which is a serious threat to visitor safety. An alternative off track self-navigable route around these structures and assets could be traversed by highly experienced visitors with experience in off track navigation skills to access Kirwan’s Hut from this direction. This option is not recommended for visitors unskilled at off track navigation and hazard awareness. Only the track asset and tunnel bridge are closed the land remains open for visitors.
